Welcome! And thanks for
your interest in the CREOL SUMMER SCIENCE CAMPS at UCF
Summer science camps are geared toward
highly motivated children who have a strong interest in
science, mathematics, and technology. Each camp is conducted
by certified Florida teachers and the curriculum is
developed by a team of scientists and educators from the
University of Central Florida. Camps are one week long.
Daily hours are 9:00 am to 4:00 pm. All activities are high
interest, hands-on, and team based and includes enrichment
activities. There are three grade levels for each camp:
Grades 3-5, Grades 6-8, and Grades 9-12 (grade level is for
the upcoming school year)
|
|
Each camp is $450.00 per week per child. UCF
Employees receive a 20% discount. Camps have a maximum
size of 15 children conducted by a
certified teachers. Lunch and snacks included. Many of
the activities will include a set of materials that the
students will keep for future experimentation.
Once
registered, you will receive information about the schedule,
drop off locations and other details. All camps will
take place on the UCF Main Campus.

Optics and Photonics
From rainbows to laser light shows,
learn about the different ways light carries and transmits
information. At the end of the week, campers will create a
laser light and sound show that will incorporate what they
have learned about mirrors, lenses, primary colors of light,
the electromagnetic spectrum, lasers and sound.

Amusement Park Physics
Having fun riding coasters is serious
physics! Campers will explore why they stay in their
seats while going through vertical loops, why they get
pushed into their seats on tight turns, and what causes the
feeling of weightlessness in long drops. They will
take the science out of the classroom on the final day of
the week as they go to a theme park and put science into
action!

Kitchen Chemistry
Who knew that there was so much
science to be found right in your kitchen. Using
simple ingredients, campers will become chemists for the
week and solve the riddle of why salt is added to cakes,
what causes the fizz in sodas, explore the mystery of the
ingredients in "science volcanoes" and have a touch of
kitchen safety thrown in for good measure!

The
Science of LOST and Found
It takes real science to find your way home and
this camp will allow the campers to get "Lost" and learn the
science of orienteering, GPS, map reading, and survival
techniques. Campers will also learn about the science
presented in several hit television series and examine if
the techniques work in real life. Be prepared to be
adventurous in this fun week!

Myth-Busting Science
The claims are out there: Eating pop rocks and soda will
make your stomach explode! If you sneeze with your
eyes open they will pop out of your head! The cardboard box
is more nutritious than the cereal! These myths and
more will be explored as the campers turn into Myth Busting
Scientists. By the end of the week, students will
explore and examine myths they have heard and design their
own experiments to test!

Severe
Storm Science
What makes the wind blow hard in a hurricane? How do
tornadoes form? What makes raindrops seem so big?
These mysteries will be solved as campers explore the
science of severe weather. Students will get to build
a simple weather monitoring station and learn how TV
meteorologists predict the weather. In one facinating
experiment, campers will capture and cook raindrops!
Campers will also tour the WESH2 television studios and meet
an on-air meteorologist.

YUCK!
Science
Creepy crawly bugs, slime, gross and yucky science are all
about this camp! Campers will explore the science of
decomposition, polymers, life science, physics, and
chemistry all disguised as some of the most disgusting bugs,
materials, and compounds that all of science can offer!
If it stinks, oozes, or crawls, you will find it here!

Forensics
Find out "who dunnit" and along the way learn about the
techniques that real forensics scientists use to solve
crimes. Learn about data collection and analysis, blood
splatter observation techniques, hair, fingerprint, and
fiber analysis, and at the end of the week solve a crime
that involves
all the techniques learned.

Science Olympiad
Get the leg up on the
competition during this week in which the campers will get
the 2008 rules and be able to prepare for the regional and
state competition. All 23 events in each division will
be presented, as well as materials for student to construct
towers, boomilevers, the basics of robots as well as tips on
how to successfully prepare for the competition at all
levels. For elementary level, students will focus on
events found in the the Elementary Science Olympiad Manual.
